Cut the Risk and Cut the Cost Car Insurance

The easiest way to cut your car insurance premiums is to cut the risk and accept a higher voluntary excess. An insurer's standard excess may be £100 but if you meet the first £250 of any claim, you'll see a reduction in your premium. This is because you're taking on more of the risk so you get a discount. But it's a gamble, be aware that you might have to meet the cost of a broken window after an attempted theft or a bill for repairing bodywork damage after a car park crunch.

Tips To Get Cheap Car Insurance

1. Shop Around
Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to shop around. Get at least three price quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state insurance department may also provide comparisons of prices charged by major insurers. (State insurance department phone numbers and Web sites can be found on the back cover.)

2. Compare Car Insurance Costs
Before you buy a new or used car, check into insurance costs. Car insurance premiums are based in part on the car’s price, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record and the likelihood of theft. Many insurers offer discounts for features that reduce the risk of injuries or theft. To help you decide what car to buy, you can get information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

3. Don't Put Everyone on Your Policy
Ensure that only regular drivers are named on the policy. You can always add someone for a few days when they really need to drive the car.

4. Increase Your Voluntary Excess

Agreeing to pay more towards the cost of any accident repairs will bring down premiums. If you are not at fault in an accident, the excess can be recovered. Beware being tempted to allow it to rise too high, however, especially if you have a lower value car.

5. Buy Homeowners and Auto Coverage From The Same Insurer
Many insurers will give you a break if you buy two or more types of insurance. You may also get a reduction if you have more than one vehicle insured with the same company. Some insurers reduce the rates for long-time customers. But it still makes sense to shop around! You may save money buying from different insurance companies, compared with a multipolicy discount.

6. Do Fewer Miles
Reduced mileage equates to a greater saving.
For example, a reduction in annual mileage of 5,000 miles could save a typical 35-year-old driver about £50 a year in premiums.
A cut of 10,000 miles a year could save more than £100.
But you must be honest about your annual mileage, as inaccuracy will jeopardise any claim.
Check your use cover - if you don't use your car to drive to work or for business - both things that increase your premium - you may be able to get a cheaper rate.

7. Mantain A Good Credit Record
Establishing a solid credit history can cut your insurance costs. Most insurers use credit information to price auto insurance policies. Research shows that people who effectively manage their credit have fewer claims. To protect your credit standing, pay your bills on time, don’t obtain more credit than you need and keep your credit balances as low as possible. Check your credit record on a regular basis and have any errors corrected promptly so that your record remains accurate.

8. Pay for Your Car Insurance Annually, Not Monthly
Check with your insurance company because sometimes you are charged interest if you pay by instalments.

9. Seek Out Other Discounts
When you comparison shop, inquire about discounts for the following:

  • Antitheft Devices
  • Auto and Homeowners Coverage with the Same Company
  • College Students away from Home
  • Defensive Driving Courses
  • Drivers Ed Courses
  • Good Credit Record
  • Higher deductibles
  • Low Annual Mileage
  • Long-Time Customer
  • More than 1 car
  • No Accidents in 3 Years
  • No Moving Violations in 3 Years
  • Student Drivers with Good Grades

(The discounts listed may not be available in all states or from all insurance companies)

The key to savings is not the discounts, but the final price. A company that offers few discounts may still have a lower overall price.

How To Protect Your Assets With Insurance

Protecting your asset with insurance

Assets are your possessions that make life easy for you; they are parts of your life. Assets can range from material to non-material. I want to adopt another view as to what constitute an asset.

My view is that assets do not necessarily mean things with financial values alone like cars, houses, business premises, machines etc. I believe what constitute an asset depends on an individual. This means things that assist such a person in earning a living e.g. a footballer’s asset could be his leg while a singer’s greatest asset could be his or her voice. As a bread winner your asset could be your lucrative job, your business, your house, your taxi etc. It will interest you to know that all these assets can and have been insured.

We are going to observe some risks that assets are exposed to and how one can protect his or her assets from them. As an individual or business it is important to protect your asset and that with appropriate insurance policies.
We are going to consider:
  • Protecting your Asset as an individual
  • Protecting your assets as a business or corporate body

1. FIRE, FLOODING, LANDSLIDE, HURRICANE AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS

These risks usually have devastating effects on assets. Fire can cause a lot of damage on buildings, cars and other physical assets so also can the other perils. Every person or business faces all the above listed risks. An insurance policy will not prevent them from occurring but it will be there for you when it does happen so that you will not end up losing everything you own to them. If your house gets burnt without an insurance policy you have lost all!

INSURANCE PROTECTION: These risks can be covered under Fire and Special Perils Insurance Policy. I am going to spare you the technical jargons. This policy covers loss or damage of properties against fire, lightning, explosion of boilers or gas, storm, flood, burst pipes and overflowing of water tanks, impact of vehicles, malicious damage, earthquake damage, aircraft damage, bush fire, tornado and cyclone as well as riot and strike. This insurance coverage is very cheap when you have to consider the premium payable vis-à-vis the value of the property. For example, if your house costs N10m and insuring it, you were charged a rate of 0.225%. This will make the annual premium you are going to pay to be N22,500. With that little amount you are covered under a fire and special perils for a year until renewal.

2. THEFT, BURGLARY AND HOUSEBREAKING

Every home or business is faced with the challenge of being robbed. Depending on the area of residence houses get burgled and robbed occasionally. Armed robbers, thieves, vandals etc are threats to houses or apartments.

INSURANCE PROTECTION: What you can do to protect your priced assets like your home and properties is Burglary and Housebreaking Insurance. This policy covers your property against loss or damage by theft. It should be noted that the policy covers not only the stolen goods but also the damage inflicted on doors or safe by the burglar in an attempt to gain entrance to the property.

It should be noted here that the insurance definition of Theft is different from its legal definition. In Insurance, theft must involve violence and application of force i.e. entry into or exit from a premises by forcible and violent means. This definition excludes stealing by tricks or any means other than the use of some form of force. However, your private residence burglary policy can cover such theft that does not include force (this is called larceny), which is covered at an additional premium. Burglary insurance too is not expensive.

For example if all the content in your house or apartment is valued at N5m then depending on the area you reside the insurer might charge you 0.5% rate which makes your premium be N25,000. Kindly note that the rate is applied only to content of the building because it is not possible for a building to be stolen!

Although the motor insurance is a compulsory insurance, you can save on a completion yet. So different factors will affect the contributions which you can influence their part at least in part. Are worth mentioning in the first place:

Drivers classification: Through years of accident-free driving you can reach a low damage freedom class, which specifies the auto insurance as a percentage. This is the most effective means to reduce contributions.
Type class: For the insurance, the type classes are binding, they are based on the statistical damage required of a specific vehicle class. Each car belongs to a type class, the overview is updated once a year.
Utilization behavior: A low mileage and a safer night Abstellort, for example, affect positively on the premiums.
Personal conditions: by the age of the driver about his profession up to the housing situation, the various criteria affect insurance premiums.

Discount protection and discount saver

The classification into a worse damage freedom class and the increase in the contributions follow a self-inflicted accident car insurance. Discount protection and discount saver can prevent this. Arrange a discount protection with your car insurance, remain you get damage freedom class and premium. Up to three losses per year allowed under these conditions regulate - however, you have also an extra seven to 15 per cent in purchasing.

The discount Savior is often free part of your policy, is possible but usually only once per year. Here the low premium is retained you though, nevertheless the insurance makes the classification into a worse damage freedom class. Bind off rescuers as well as discount protection in a way your provider: If you want to change the insurance, you can not take the percentages to the new car insurance. The company will be classified on the basis of the actual damages namely you.

Cheap car insurance for beginners

A car insurance for novice is often relatively expensive. This is due to their lack of driving experience and a higher than average carelessness which is reflected also in the accident statistics. But, there are ways to complete a cheap car insurance for drivers.

An option is to ask the insurer of the parents whether entry in the damage freedom class half is possible. This corresponds to a percentage range between 100 and 140 depending on the provider. The downside is that no free choice of insurance is possible. More often the way is used appropriately, that the parents of the young rider complete car insurance for a car. So, you run the police using their name while daughter or son of the main users of the car is. This caused an accident, the demotion in the damage category concerns only the second car. A start is possible at best with the classification of the Erstwagens depending on the age of the driver at least in SF, half.

Cancel car insurance: to go properly

There are several reasons to switch car insurance. If you are unhappy with a settlement, not be willing to accept an increase in premium or have simply found a better rate, you can cancel your car insurance - but not always. You are bound to your notice period or subject to specific cases. You authorize the following situations to cancel your auto insurance:

Re-registration or change of vehicle: You buy another car - whether used or new - you can change the insurance for this.
In the event of damage: after the settlement of a damage

How To Make A Third Party Car Insurance Claim

car insurance

Do you know that your Third Party Car Insurance Certificate in Nigeria has a N1,000,000 property damage cover on it? Do you also know that the life cover on it is unlimited? If you don’t know, now you know. Your Third Party Car Insurance Certificate is more than ‘Police-let-me-pass’ as it is commonly called in Nigeria, it is a valid piece of paper!

The issue of whether Insurance Companies pay claim is no more an issue presently because the Insurance Industry has been revamped. Please feel free to read Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims. Now how do you make a Third Party Claim?

How To Make A Third Party Car Insurance Claim

A Third Party Only Car Insurance covers your legal liability (as a holder or insured) to third parties in respect of any damage to their properties (minimum of N1m) and for any injury or death(unlimited) to them from the use your motor vehicle. It also covers your legal fees for defense of a claim in court.
To make a Third Party Claim follow the steps below carefully.

1. NOTIFICATION

Once an accident, loss or damage occurs and it was decided that you are at fault by the officer or people on the spot, contact your insurer immediately. Note that you are not supposed to admit liability on behalf of the insurer; it is the duty of the third party to prove liability or be determined in the court. Call your insurer on phone and for documentary purpose write a letter of notification or email to your insurer. The letter should give a very brief description of the incident stating the date and time of the loss. Since this is a third party claim thus any impending prosecution, inquest or fatal inquiry in respect of the occurrence should be communicated to the insurer with your letter or in subsequent letters. Also, any claim letter from the third party, writ summons and process should be forwarded to the insurer immediately.

2. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

After your notification has been received, the insurer writes to sympathize with and assures you of handling the claim or to reject the claim if you are not covered. If the claim is not repudiated, the insurer’s letter will be accompanied with a claim form for you to fill. The claim form asks detailed questions relating to the claim. The form helps to get a clear description of the claim. Ensure you complete it accurately without misrepresenting anything. The information you put down in the claim form should be the same as those in the Police Report. The insurer will request for some claim substantiating documents which include:

For Property Damage Claim
  • Estimate of repairs
  • Photographs of the accidental vehicles
  • Third Party claim letter
  • Driver’s statement of loss
  • Police report
  • Driver’s license of the driver in charge of the vehicle prior to the accident

For Death or injury claim
  • Writ summons or court order
  • Police Report
  • Third Party claim letter
  • Photographs of the accident
  • Hospital bill
  • Death certificate
  • Corona’s report
  • Driver’s statement of loss
  • Driver’s license of the driver in charge of the vehicle prior to the accident
After you have gotten the documents, attach them to the Completed Claim Form and forward to the insurer (originals should be forwarded to avoid unnecessary delay).
